Family and Consumer Science
The overall mission of the department is to develop and use knowledge for the improvement of everyday life. The approach to understanding the critical problems of individual humans and their families is based on integrating knowledge from root disciplines and from specialties in the department: textiles and merchandising; human nutrition and food/dietetics; and child and family studies. Specifically, we integrate knowledge about: human relationships (child and family studies), human health (nutrition), human material needs (shelter and clothing), and the human need for a sense of aesthetics and harmony. Although individuals may concentrate their studies in one of these specialized areas, integration across specializations is fundamental.
