A Brief History of Cooperative Extension

  • The Morrill Act of 1862 established federally funded land-grant institutions in each state for the purpose of providing education in agriculture and mechanic arts.

  • The Hatch Act of 1887 established a bond between the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the land-grant institutions, thus providing federal funding for agricultural experiment stations at the land-grant institutions in each state.

  • The Smith-Lever Act of 1918 established Cooperative Extension Service (a cooperation between land-grant institutions and county level governments) so that educators could effectively distribute information and offer education on a local level.
