Q: Can I transfer my license plates?
A: Credit can be given to new purchases only; but can be transferred off any type of vehicle as long as that vehicle is sold before transferring.

Q: Why do you figure plate fees on the new price when that is not what I paid?
A: State statutes require a consistency for coming up with a value. Depreciation of the factory price occurs for 5 years as the auto ages and options figure into that amount. NADA and VIN numbers are required in this valuation process.

Q: Will I be penalized for buying a vehicle and parking it?
A: Yes, State Statutes require sales tax to be paid within 50 days of the purchase.

Q: How do I go about getting Wyoming Plates?
A: A title is required to get Wyoming plates, or a non-resident title can be obtained from the County Clerk with your out of state registration. See County Clerk's office for title information. Proof of auto insurance is also required.

Q: How long do I have to get license plates when I move to Wyoming from another state?
A: Retired people have 120 days. Otherwise once you are employed and establish a residence you are required to gets plates ASAP.

Q: Can I get help paying my property tax when I am on a fixed income?
A: There are programs available through the Senior center and Treasurers office. A veteran’s exemption is also available through the Assessors office.

Q: Why do I receive a bill for my property taxes when I have an escrow?
A: State law requires us to send the bill to the owner of record on January 1. You should contact our office or your financial institution by verifying your taxes have been paid. Payment information is also available on the Sheridan County Treasures web site.

Q: I find my tax notice confusing, when are my taxes due?
A: You have two options; pay the full amount by December 31 of the current year, or you can pay them in halves. The first half payment becomes delinquent on November 10 and the second half on May 10.

Q: What is considered a pickup truck?
A: "Pickup truck" means any motor vehicle excluding multipurpose vehicles and passenger cars, designed, used or maintained for the transportation of property with an attached open cargo box directly behind the passenger compartment and designed to be equipped with a tailgate which can be lowered or opened to load or unload property or cargo.

Q: What are the requirements for a commercial license plate?
A: The total GVW must exceed 26,000 pounds. Anyone 55,000 pounds or more must show proof that they have paid HVUT (heavy highway tax). Estimated mileage for the year is also required.
