PROJECTS CURRENTLY UNDER CONSTRUCTION
PROJECTS UPDATE
January 4, 2008
Half
Way Lane Bridge
Installation
of the new bridge is well under way with an anticipated substantial completion
date of March 1, 2008 and a final completion date of March 31, 2008. The
project is on schedule and in budget.
The damaged bridge has been removed and
the area dressed up. Western Water Consultants has completed Phase 1, which
included drilling, lab testing and surveying. They are currently designing the
foundation, reviewing the hydrology, and researching bridge selection.
Barker
Construction and Lewis Holding Inc. were contracted to haul, place and
shape
approximately 10,000 cubic yards of material to reconstruct the road to
the
west of Dr. Tim Scott's approach in order to improve the line of sight
from
this approach. This project was completed on 12/20/07 at a cost of
$68,157.50.
Due to the onset of winter, final grading of the roadway, shaping and
seeding
of the side slopes and the rebuilding of the fence will be postponed
until
spring. At that time the SR&B crew will finish the remaining work.
The County Engineer's office has completed a design for the
reconstruction of the roadway in the
vicinity of the VA water treatment plant. This project will require
approximately 6,500 cubic yards of material and will be scheduled for
commencement in the spring of 2008.
Passaic Rd
The condition of Passaic Road was
checked at the end of November to determine if the treatment with bentonite and
chloride was effective. The first six miles (from the highway to the junction
with Buffalo Creek) are in very good shape with only a little scrubbing on a
couple of the sharper corners. The second six miles (from the junction with
Buffalo Creek to the north) are showing some raveling in several locations.
Additional clay material still needs to be added to the road material to help
hold it together and to help the chloride work.
Wild Horse - South Prong Roads -
Upper Powder River Rd
Wild Horse Road was checked at the end
of November also. It is holding together quite well. Some potholes are starting
to develop, but overall the road is in excellent condition. There is one spot
at the end of the one mile that was stabilized that is coming apart. South Prong road is in excellent condition with only a few
potholes starting to develop.
Mydland Rd - West 5th
Street - Kentucky Ave. - Dry Ranch Road
Our department has asked Randall Engineering Surveys to provide the needed description on West 5th and Dry Ranch Road.
The status of this project is unchanged at this time.
KROE Lane - East Ridge Rd
The City is working on the paper work
to get these roads transferred to the City. Prestfeldt has been contracted
jointly by the County and the City to prepare a description of the road. The
status of this project is unchanged at this time.
SLIB GRANT 2005
Linear grading has
been completed on Lower Prairie Dog from Coutant Creek Road to
the railroad crossing. The final hauling and placing of gravel on this portion
of the road and treatment with chloride will be scheduled for the spring of
2008.
This
road will be scheduled for treatment with chloride in 2008.
Pro
Stock Fencing has completed the ROW fence on both sides of the roadway from the
north end of the second section of the realignment to the north end of the
first section. The contractor should complete the fence on the first section of
the realignment in the next three weeks. The bentonite and chloride that was
applied to the first 6.5 miles in September is holding up very well considering
the amount of traffic that this road is experiencing. The chloride treatment on
the realignment section is developing more potholes and starting to come apart
in a couple of places. This may be due to the fact that this was the first
treatment with chloride and Pee Gee gravel has a low PI. The County Road & Bridge personnel started hauling gravel from the
Pee Gee Pit on November 19, 2007 using six trucks. They started at approximately
mile marker 6.5, proceeding to the north. As of December 20, 2007, a six-inch
lift of gravel has been placed on approximately seven miles of road. They
started hauling and placing gravel again on January 2, 2008 with four trucks.
Status of this project
remains unchanged. The Clear Creek Bridge will have to be replaced before we
can move forward.
The
status of this project is unchanged.
ULM Road
Tietjen
gravel was hauled and placed on the road from Clearmont to Ulm. Another lift
(3") of gravel is needed on this road plus bentonite will need to be
incorporated into the road material before chloride is applied. The bentonite
and chloride work will be scheduled along with the work on Upper Powder River
road.
Beatty Gulch & Beatty Spur
The
work to satisfy the grant requirements has been completed and the final draw
down request has been submitted. The SR&B crew has also hauled and placed
pit run material on approximately two miles of the dry weather portion of the
Beatty Gulch road to upgrade this portion of the road. This work was not part
of the grant project.
SLIB Grant Projects 2006
Dutch Creek Road
Upgrading of this road
was approved in the 2006 SLIB grant. Several culverts have been replaced and/or
extended and the ditches have been pulled and the road reshaped. The first lift
of gravel has been placed on approximately 13 miles of road. Dust control is
also included in this project and will be scheduled for 2008. Additional
grading and culvert work will be performed in the spring. A contractor will be
utilized to perform the grading work and SR&B will perform the culvert work.
The culvert work and the
cattle guard replacement added to the contract with Smith Contracting have been
completed. We have been utilizing eight to twelve trucks to haul and
place gravel from the Kusel Pit on this road. A six-inch lift
has been completed on approximately six miles. Dust control is included in the grant and will be
scheduled for 2008. The County also plans to perform additional grading and culvert
work on a portion of this road. A contractor will be utilized to perform the
grading work in conjunction with the work on Dutch Creek and SR&B will
perform the culvert work.
Lower Prairie Dog
The bid proposal for the realignment of 1.4 miles of roadway is scheduled for advertisement on January 9, 2008 with a projected date of February 5, 2008 for awarding the contract.
SR - Buffalo Creek
Road
The status of this
project is unchanged.
Replacement of this
bridge was approved in the 2006 SLIB grant. Western Water Consultants has
finished its study of the geology for the bridge abutments.
Downer Addition County
Road 80
A grant has been approved
to cover a 50-50 match on a $1,000,000.00 road project. Entech Inc. was hired
to evaluate drainage problems and complete the road design. Design work is
currently underway.
CMAQ Grant 2006
Murphy Gulch Rd
This project includes
linear grading, placing crushed gravel on approximately 6 miles of road and
treating with chloride. Culvert work and linear grading will be scheduled for
the spring of 2008. Gravel hauling and
placing along with chloride treatment will be scheduled after the linear
grading has been completed. This work will need to be completed by September
30, 2008 to satisfy the grant requirements.
Magnesium Chloride was
applied to 4.0 miles of this road.
Ten miles of this road
was treated with Magnesium Chloride.
GRAVEL PITS
Rhodes Pit
Design
of a temporary bridge to access the pit is underway. This is part of the work that is being performed by Western Water
Consultants. This bridge could possibly be used for a detour to the Thompson
Creek Road while the Clear Creek Bridge is being replaced.
Kusel
Pit No. 2
We
are currently preparing a permit for Pits No. 3 and 4. Crushed gravel from Pit No.2, which is
nearly depleted, is currently being hauled to Dutch Creek and Dow Prong.
Pee Gee Pit
Gravel from this pit is
currently being hauled and placed on the Lower Powder River road.
Bocek Pit
Sheridan Road and Bridge
has indicated that they want to keep this pit active for a source of pit run
scoria. The necessary permits will be obtained to keep this pit active.
Dewey Pit No. 4
Sheridan County entered
into an hourly agreement with P.E.Grosch Construction Inc. to haul
approximately 50,000 cubic yards of stockpiled overburden material to reclaim
the pit disturbance. Grosch Construction completed this project on 1/2/2008.
The landowner, Carlton Dewey, requested that a stockpile of fines be left in
the pit for his use at a later date. There is still a stockpile of crushed
gravel in the pit that will be used on Lower Prairie Dog Road. The engineering
department in the near future will be evaluating the financial feasibility of
crushing more gravel from this pit.
If you would like more information on the projects you may call the Sheridan County Engineering Office at (307) 674-2920.
