Sheridan County has approximately 500 miles of dirt roads and approximately 30 miles of paved roads.  The roads are divided into eight districts with one operator per district.  Each district operator plans and performs the maintenance work in his area and takes a great deal of pride and ownership in their district.  Additional personnel and equipment from the Sheridan Road & Bridge shop support the district operators. 

 

During the summer months, additional personnel are hired to help perform maintenance duties such as mowing shoulders, removing brush and trees from the right of way and applying chloride for dust control.  A major portion of the work recently has been the mitigation of the effects of the Coal Bed Methane industry.  Some county roads are experiencing traffice counts of over 500 vehicles per day with the majority of these vehicles being large heavy trucks.  Speed and weight both contribute to the deterioration of the road surface material.  County roads are constantly being improved for the safety of the general public.  Roads are widened, realigned for greater line of sight and treated with chloride for dust control, all which contribute to safety. 

 

In addition to road maintenance and improvements, operators are called upon to respond to emergencies such as fires and snowstorms.  This past spring when Sheridan County was hit with a major snowstorm, the county operators were out with their equipment opening county roads for emergency response personnel and equipment.  Several of these operators worked more than 24 hours without a break.  This past summer Sheridan Road & Bridge also had several operators with equipment (motor graders and water trucks) helping fight the fire on the mountain in Little Goose Canyon.  In addition to helping with the mountain fire, Sheridan County Road & Bridge personnel also fought several grass fires during the summer months.
