2005 D.A.R.E. Officer of the year

Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) is a collaborative effort by certified law enforcement officers, educators, students, parents, and community to offer an educational program in the classroom to prevent or reduce drug abuse and violence among our young people. The emphasis of DARE is to help students recognize and resist the overt pressures that may influence them to experiment with alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, inhalants, and other drugs, as well as with violence.

The D.A.R.E. program is a comprehensive Substance Abuse and Best Practice program that meets the goals of the federal Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act. The program offers weekly lessons focusing on the hazards of drug use/abuse, the development of social competence, communication skills, self-esteem, saying "no" with confidence, empathy, decision making, and conflict resolution.

The D.A.R.E. program is designed for grades kindergarten through senior high school, however, the program is consistently taught at the 2nd, 4th, and 5th/6th grade levels in Sheridan County.
