Significant Snowfall Increases Avalanche Danger in Big Horn Mountains

Sheridan, Wyoming 1-19-2024 — Recent heavy snowfall in the Big Horn Mountains has heightened the risk of avalanches, posing a serious threat to individuals enjoying winter weather conditions. While the Big Horn Mountains do not have an official avalanche center providing a danger scale, neighboring locations such as the Gallatin National Forest Avalanche Center and Teton National Forest have rated the avalanche danger in their areas as high.

Tragically, one person has lost their life in an avalanche in Wyoming this year. This incident emphasizes the critical need for heightened awareness and precautions when engaging in winter recreational activities in the region.

As a precautionary measure, it is strongly advised to avoid enjoying winter activities alone. Always inform someone about your plans, including your location and expected time of return. Additionally, having essential tools such as a probe, beacon, and shovel is crucial for safety when venturing into mountainous snow-covered terrain. If you need help, do not wait to call 911.
